INFO
Expectations
- Follow the Hellgate code of conduct.
- Be on time to practice.
- Strive to be a great teammate.
- Come to practice, meets, and team functions with a good attitude, ready to get better, have fun, and contribute to HKXC (Hellgate Knights Cross Country)!
- When the coaches are talking, you are not!
- Every runner needs to be at practice. When you sign up for HKXC, you have made a commitment to your team, school, and yourself. We understand students are busy but we expect you to follow through with the commitment you have made to the team. Once school starts, missing more than 2 practices can be grounds for dismissal from the team. If you miss a practice, you must let the coaches know you won't be there before practice. You can call or message any of the coaches to let them know.
Lettering Requirements
Varsity Letter (Accomplish at least 1 of 3)
- Make the State travel team. The travel team consist of the top 9 boys and 9 girls at the end of the season.
- Run as a Varsity runner in at least one meet. Top 7 kids each week make Varsity.
Commitment Letter (Accomplish ALL)
- Attend EVERY practice and meet during the 2023 season starting on 8/14.
- Attend 20 summer practices from 6/12 - 8/10.
- Hit fundraising goal set by coaches.
- Show a drive to improve everyday.
- Be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
- Follow daily expectations of being an HKXC runner (see "Expectations" at the top of the page).
Gear Needed
- A good pair of running shoes. We are running everyday and a good pair of shoes can make a difference in your experience and help keep you healthy.
Runner's Edge offers 10% off to all high school runners. The employees can help you select a pair shoes that work for your feet, the amount of mileage you are running and any of your season goals.
- Running (or athletic) apparel
- We require every runner to have a simple running watch. This is not a requirement, but will make a difference in your season. A watch not only lets you know how much time you have been running, but will help with splits during workouts. Some runners will choose to purchase a GPS watch, but that is not expected. You can find a very inexpensive watch but just make sure it has chronograph and lap functions.
Meets/Travel
Every runner in good standing will attend all meets. If you attend practice, make a commitment to getting better and being a good teammate, you will travel to all meets. The only meet that is limited is the State Meet. We are only able to take our top 9 boys and 9 girls to State. There is no cost to travel to in-season meets. Keep in mind you may need to bring some money for food after the meets.
Strength Training
We have a strength training program 2 days a week coached by Olympian and professional coach Courtney Babcock. The cost of the strength training is $70 for the summer (18-20 sessions). If you have trouble coming up with $70, please let me know. We don’t want anybody to miss out that wants to take part in these strength classes. Please make checks out to Courtney Babcock.
Varsity Training Camp (8/11 - 8/13)
There are a few practices, events and meetings throughout the year that are specific to current varsity level runners. With a large team it is important we set aside time to communicate directly to them about varsity targets, goals, expectations and training. One of those events is the Varsity Training Camp. When selecting the 18-20 runners we can take, we look at past performance (chance of making varsity), current fitness (we will have a few key workouts during the summer to check in on fitness), and commitment to training with the team throughout the year.
NXR (11/15 - 11/17)
This is a post season regional meet. This a meet for Varsity (expected to attend) and JV runners. More info to come...
